When Headlines Change: Keeping Your Financial Plan in Focus
Recent headlines about inflation, interest rates, trade policy, and global events can create understandable concern. When markets move, it is natural to wonder whether you should make a change.
At Anchor Wealth Management, we believe successful investing is not about reacting to every headline. It is about having a clear plan, understanding what you own and why you own it, and making decisions that support your long-term goals.
Headlines Change. Your Goals Matter.
Your financial life is about much more than the next news cycle. It is about the retirement you envision, the lifestyle you want to maintain, the people you want to provide for, and the legacy you hope to leave behind.
Those goals should not change every time the market moves.
That does not mean we ignore what is happening in the economy or around the world. We pay attention, evaluate the facts, and monitor your plan. But short-term fear should not drive long-term decisions.
Five Areas We Keep in Focus
During periods of uncertainty, our role is to help clients keep the big picture in view. These are five areas we regularly consider as we evaluate a financial plan.
Before making an investment change, consider these five areas:
Your Goals
Has something meaningful changed in your life—a retirement date, business transition, family need, health event, or major purchase? Those changes may warrant a planning conversation.
Your Time Horizon
Money needed in the near term should be positioned differently than money intended for goals years down the road. Knowing which dollars are meant for which purpose can bring clarity during volatile periods.
Your Risk Tolerance
Market declines can reveal whether your strategy truly matches your comfort level. Periods of market movement can be a useful reminder to confirm that your investment strategy continues to reflect your goals, time horizon, and comfort with risk. That is a conversation we revisit as life and circumstances evolve.
Your Liquidity Needs
Appropriate cash reserves and a clear income strategy can help reduce the pressure to sell long-term investments at the wrong time—especially for those near or in retirement.
Your Tax Situation
Market movement can occasionally create tax-planning considerations. As part of our ongoing work with clients, we evaluate relevant opportunities—such as rebalancing, tax-loss harvesting,charitable-giving strategies, or Roth conversions—when they fit the client’s broader financial plan.
Focus on What You Can Control
We cannot control inflation reports, interest-rate decisions, global events, or daily market movements. We can control how much we save and spend, how we manage taxes, whether we maintain sufficient cash reserves, and whether our investment strategy still aligns with our goals.
A strong financial plan brings focus back to the areas where you have meaningful control.
Keep Perspective
Periods of uncertainty are not a reason to abandon your plan. They are often the reason you created one in the first place.
At Anchor Wealth Management, our role is to help you make informed, intentional decisions. We want you to understand how current events may affect your financial life while maintaining the perspective needed to stay focused on long-term progress.
If your life, goals, income needs, or priorities have changed, please let us know. We are always available to help you understand how those changes may affect your financial plan.

The Educator’s Guide to Retirement: Understanding Your State Pension and Planning Beyond It
For Illinois educators, a pension is one of the most valuable retirement benefits you’ll ever receive. But despite its importance, many teachers and school administrators don’t fully understand how it works until they’re approaching retirement.
The good news is that you don’t have to figure it out alone. By learning the basics of your pension early and incorporating it into a broader retirement strategy, you can make more informed decisions and retire with greater confidence.
Learn How Your Pension Works
Your first resource should be the Illinois Teachers’ Retirement System (TRS). The TRS website (TRSIL.org) offers valuable information about your benefits, retirement eligibility, and estimated pension income.
If you haven’t already, create an online account through the TRS member portal. Having access to your service credit, salary history, and retirement estimates can help you make better financial decisions throughout your career.
Many school districts also host informational meetings about TRS benefits. While it may be tempting to skip them, attending even one can provide a solid understanding of the program that benefits you for years to come. An hour invested today could answer questions you won’t think to ask until you’re much closer to retirement.

Adam’s Nightstand
I recently finished Build a Business You Love by Dave Ramsey. My wife and I were first introduced to Dave Ramsey in 2007, when we attended and completed Financial Peace University. Since 2010, Anchor Wealth Management has served as a SmartVestor Pro in our area, helping people with investing. I have also had the opportunity to attend Dave’s annual conference,EntreLeadership.
So, when I heard he had written a new book, I knew I wanted to pick it up. As Dave typically does, he keeps things straightforward and practical—and this book is no exception.
He walks readers through the six drivers of business: Personal, Purpose, People, Plan, Product, and Profit. Drawing on both the EntreLeadership training and his own experience building a business, Dave also outlines five distinct stages of growth, along with the challenges and rewards of each stage.
The five stages are:
- Treadmill Operator
- Pathfinder
- Trailblazer
- Peak Performer
- Legacy Builder
I highly recommend this book, whether you are a business owner or not. It is full of practical, actionable takeaways that can be applied to your work and business. It also includes QR codes that provide access to additional EntreLeadership content.
